Mom made Orange-Nut cookies

Rebecca Petrie of Hagerstown grew up in California and remembers the Orange-Nut Refrigerator Cookies her mother made. The recipe is adapted from a 1948 Sunset Magazine.

"They're nice and simple. They're not too fussy," she says.

Petrie's 6-year-old son, Max, will be helping her this year. Petrie, a home economist, teaches Life Skills at North Hagerstown High School, but that doesn't include food. "Is cooking a life skill?" Petrie asks.

"I think it is," she says.

Orange-Nut Refrigerator Cookies

  • 1 cup soft butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons orange peel, grated
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, finely minced

Cream butter and sugars. Add egg and beat until fluffy. Stir in orange peel.

Sift flour, measure and mix with soda, salt and nuts.

Add to butter mixture and mix well.

Divide dough in half and shape each into a roll 7 inches long and 2 1/2 inches in diameter.

Wrap in waxed paper and chill until firm.

Cut into slices about 1/4-inch thick.

Bake on greased cookie sheets in a 375-degree oven for about 12 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.
