Grandma Hunter's Brown Bread


2 cups hot water
1 cup raisins
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 1/4 cups flour
1 egg, beaten
nuts, optional

Combine hot water, raisins and shortening. Let mixture cool.

Combine baking powder, baking soda, sugar, salt and flour, then add egg and nuts. Add to hot water mixture and stir together.

Bake at one hour plus a few minutes at 350 degrees on middle rack of oven. Bread is done when a toothpick that is inserted comes out clean. Makes two small loaves or one big loaf.
